Thankful Thoughts

Happy Thanksgiving my American friends! I’m extremely thankful for a four day weekend because I still have a LOT to do before I launch my redesign. Oh bedsidesigners, you are in for a treat. I cannot wait to share the story behind the redesign. My thoughts and process this month, and the behind the scene journey of switching from wordpress.com to wordpress.org. I remember before I launched my own happiness blog project I had a conversation with my husband. I kept saying, “I want to take bedsidesign to the next level and I’m so limited with the .com version.”  I had no idea where to begin. I was so scared of failing. I was terrified of making the leap. The dot-com is easy. It’s familiar. I don’t have a huge blogging budget and I didn’t want to dig a hole for something I couldn’t afford to maintain. Thankfully right around this big conversation I got a bonus at my day job. Cha-ching! The amount was just what I needed to kick it up a notch. As I’m coming to the end of my redesign, and preparing to launch a new look, site, and some extra secrets [yay for secrets] I am completely thankful that I am able to do this. Today I am trying to be present in all of this. So as I am feeling inspired and excited I just want to remind you to:

October Reflections on Community

Last week I shared with you all some of the things that help me since I was having a pretty rotten week. This week is completely the opposite and it rocks, probably because I started it off with the Salt Market!

salt market syracuse signA market meetup hosted in Syracuse featured a ton of local artists, designers, letterpress printers (the handset type kind!), and jewelry galore.

salt market

It was pretty great to see so many people supporting the community. Plus I got to see some friendly faces.salt market syracuse

I swiped a ton of business cards. Here are some of my favorites:

Being out and about in my city totally brings me happiness. I love Syracuse. I also like connecting with people who also care about where we live and want to enhance it. Tonight I will be attending a CNY [Central NY!] blogger meet-up. I’m pretty excited to connect with other bloggers in the area – it seems like a pretty diverse bunch. Along with being locally oriented I love this wonderful blogging world.

From guest series like the weekly team-up with artsocial for the IN LOVE series to DIY inspiration by Sara from Beautifully Contained  – I love sharing the wealth. Cue commandment #6 from my own happiness project. I’m looking forward to to November where I will be refocusing, re-branding and re-designing bedsidesign. Don’t worry though, there’s no way I can leave community in the dust.

To carry this month’s focus on into November I’m offering you an opportunity to team up with me. <– check it out!

What brings you happiness? And as always, this is a linkup. Join the movement!

Local Community + Happiness

This month I am focusing on community. During the planning process of my own personal happiness project I knew I wanted to start out with something I already found passion in. When I am passionate about something it fuels me. Since Gretchen started her first month trying to emphasize energy I thought about where I find energy. What gets me all giddy and ready to jump out of bed in the morning? Community: personally [the network of family, friends and work], locally, and my blogging community. I’m getting pretty pumped because this coming week is jam-packed with local Syracuse goodness. First up: The 4th Annual Salt Market!

Syracuse Salt Market When I visited Craft Chemistry Briana told me about the Salt Market. I knew I could trust her suggestion because I already found a pair of dainty, vintage earrings and a cool typographic map print of Syracuse at her shop. Orignal/Independent local artists + live music + food from some of my faveee local eateries? Count me in! I love meeting new creative people and I love the city of Syracuse. Combining these brings me a whole lotta happiness. Just wait… it gets even better: I have friends that are going too! Sara from Beautifully Contained [she showcases her amazing DIY craftiness with you bedsidesigners monthly, plus check out her awesome finds at Craft Chemistry] and Variya [my go-to jewelry friend: remember she made my wedding bling?] are attending. I can only imagine how awesome it is going to be. If you are a local reader you definitely do not want to miss this.

Along with the Salt Market next Thursday night I am also attending a local blogger meet-up. I’m so excited to go to Al’s, a swanky wine and whiskey lounge to meet some local bloggy friends. But more on that soon!

How have you reached out to your local community? I would love to hear your stories and any suggestions! As always, remember that this is a happiness linkup and welcomed to join!

The Happiness Project: Week 4

I’m more than halfway through reading The Happiness Project. I’m trying to keep track of all the amazing things I am learning as I read. Whenever I read a profound quote or have an idea I jot it down. As I am trying to get to the bottom of what really makes me happy this quote stands out:

“I have an idea of who I wish I were, and that obscures my understanding of who I actually am.”

[Be Yourself print by Rachel Burbee]

As I am evaluating what makes me “me” I’m trying to be realistic. I’m taking a closer look at what I think makes me happy. I find it easier saying what I think should make me happy vs. what actually does. What are the things that make you happy?

I’m getting closer to putting together the ideas and things that I want to work on for my own happiness project, and that in itself is making me happy. In the meantime, I am totally enjoying hearing the things that others are learning and working through. Since this is a bloghop, please feel free to join or check out what the others are saying about happiness!

The Happiness Project: Week 3

Well kids this week my copy of The Happiness Project came! I dove right in and all the praise is well deserved. I’m really enjoying it. I’m equally loving this link up so if you are a blogger you should seriously consider joining!

Even though I just started the book it doesn’t mean that I have to wait until I’m done reading to be happy! So often I feel like people [myself included!] procrastinate on happiness because they are waiting for a special timeframe when life is easier and it’ll just miraculously fit into their schedule. Believe me, we’ll all be waiting a very long time! I love this quote by Walt Whitman about happiness. There’s nothing wrong with planning but if you are so busy always planning your life you’ll miss it.

walt whitman quote by christie jones

My mom called yesterday and the topic of happiness came up. She was asking me what would make me happy?

It’s great because I feel like I’m in a really positive place. I’ve been stepping out in ways that I haven’t before. I am intentionally working towards certain goals. I think if I was in a negative place I would be quicker to make irrational and unrealistic goals. I think personality also plays a key role in all of this, and I loved this post on the Alt blog about the 12 most striking tendencies of creative people. I think my favorite was #12 – Aren’t Alone. Through this linkup and other blogging networks I’m finally feeling like I’m not alone is this big blogging world, and that makes me happy.

altBING-slc-2013

One place that I would love to network and meet other awesome creative people is at Alt. I’ve followed Alt for a while and always wanted to go. By the time I realized they would be in NY they were sold out…bummer. I’m hopinggggg [pretty please with cherries on top!] that I win this free ticket because that would seriously make me HAPPY! IN LOVE: HAPPINESS

Happy Monday! Okay – I’ve had this trick up my sleeve and the time has come to share it with you. Erin from Artsocial & I are collaborating on Mondays with a new series called “In Love” – I will be guest blogging on her awesome blog and she will be starting off the Bedsidesign week by guest blogging here. In addition, you can follow our inspiration behind the scenes via Pinterest where we are collecting the images that we will share with you! You guys are going to love Erin – her blog is flippin’ great and her eye for art/design/fashion/music/you get the point – is spot on. Please give her a warm welcome and don’t forget to check out my post on her blog!

IN LOVE: HAPPINESS

Hi there, friends. I’m preeetty stoked to be guest posting on Bedsidesign… and talking about happiness is kind of my favorite thing right now. Here are a few of the things that make me smile, bring me inspiration, and/or cause me to do spontaneous happy dances…

in-love roundup by artsocial

1. Oh the Pinterest. Not only do I love Pinterest, but I can’t get enough of the incredible lifestyle photography that’s pinned on the reg. Signe Vilstrup is one of my absolute favorites… P.S. photo shoots with balloons? CANNOT go wrong.

2. Speaking of balloons, these balloon prints by Inflated/Deflated are so clever I can’t stand it. It’s such a simple, yet brilliant idea… it makes me want to write my own sayings on deflated balloons (is that weird?). I’m a big contemporary art fan, so taking the mundane and turning it into a work of art is right up my alley. I often find myself thinking I just want to travel… et tu?

3. So I know I’m a guest on Bedsidesign and I don’t want to start off on the wrong foot, but… I’m kind of a cat lady. This is my cat Meowmers. He’s a sassy little guy, he brings me much happiness, and he sometimes finds himself on my Instagram feed… only sometimes, I promise. I try to keep my cat lady-ness in check.

4. I mentioned I love me some contemporary art – well Paul Octavious is one of the most talented and creative contemporary photographers out there. I have such an art crush on him… if I ever saw him in real life, I’d probably faint boy-band-fan style.

5. There’s something about cupcakes and happiness – they seem inextricably linked. They’re like an individually-sized gift just for you… and mini cupcakes? Well they’re even better cuz you can have like 3 and not feel bad.

6. Flats. I luurve them. I’m only 5’3″ so I should probs be interested in heels… but I’m not. They just don’t feel like me.  So I’m saying nay to high heels and embracing my short-ness, ya hear. And Madewell does flats oh so well.

7. For some reason I have a soft spot for ’90s rap music… This gem from Friends of Type is referencing a little ditty by Skee Lo… takes me right back to high school, cruisin’ around in my *ahem* Neon… not very baller.

What are some of your favorite things, friends? I’d love to hear!

The Happiness Project: Week 2

CAUTION: THE WORD “HAPPY” IS USED 7 TIMES BELOW. THIS POST IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART.

The Happiness Project linkup

Thursdays are turning into one of my favorite days of the week due to The Happiness Project: Be Happy Linkup! A bunch of rad bloggers are all linking up on Thursdays with inspiring, positive, and compelling posts. I decided last-minute that I needed to join the bandwagon before it was too late. I can honestly say I’m so happy that I did! I ordered my copy of The Happiness Project and I am anxiously waiting for it to arrive.

your dream job does not exist you must create it by bedsidesign

[I created this image using Phoster]

I loved seeing that quote streaming all throughout pinterest. Dream jobs are tough. I like the idea of having to create your dream job because that means there is some work that has to take place – hence the reason why it is a job. I read a fellow blogger’s [Girl with The Blue Bow] post about her ideal day which got me thinking about what makes me happy and what my “ideal day” would be like.

Some of my friends ask me why I blog, how long it takes, and if I am going to continue doing it. But one of the biggest questions I am asked is if I like it. No, I don’t like it. I love it. It is something that I am intentional about. I love communication and this is my favorite form. I blog because it started as a hobby and I can’t stop. I blog because I love sharing inspiration and creativity. I blog because it brings me so much joy. Blogging takes up a large portion of my time. Whether it is creating a video, collaborating with others [get ready for some exciting announcements coming soon] or just editing text blogging takes time. I don’t mind that it takes time though because I love it. I have no plans of stopping. My plans are to amp it up!

My ideal day would be to continue blogging as my dream job. I know there are so many other blogs [that are awesome!] out there. Sometimes that discourages me but I also know that no one else is Christie Jones. I blog because I love engaging with you. I have “met” so many wonderful, and inspiring people through bedsidesign. I love seeing emails and comments or tweets from fellow bloggers and readers. It warms my heart. You make me happy. Yep, you’re making me happy right now – thank you! Happiness is a choice and I am choosing what makes me happy.

you are what you love by bedsidesign

[I also created this image using Phoster]

The saying is true – you are what you eat and I’m sure you are what you love. I’ve never really embraced labels or titles and I still sheepishly chuckle when someone mentions that I am a blogger. I still feel like a freshman entering high school – full of potential, full of nerves, and am praying to God I don’t get shoved in a locker [don’t worry that never happened to me but still!]. When I made the vlog I almost didn’t want to say my name. Over the course of this series though I am going to try to embrace what I love and where my passions lie. In school this week they asked me what I do – and I said that I blog. Now, they didn’t know what a blog was but I still admitted to it. That was a huge milestone for me. Without being all philosophical I hope you continue on this journey with me – I have no idea where it is going, but I will be nailing down some goals shortly.

I would love to hear about what makes you happy, where you find joy and how you are pursuing it. If you are a blogger and are interested in joining the link up check out the link at the bottom.
