A Big Announcement About bedsidesign

I’m amazed that November is almost over. You know what that means – I’m wrapping up my month of refocusing – branding – and redesign. To be honest I’m so ready to move on from this month [in a good way]. I’ve learned a lot about myself, what makes me happy as a blogger and where I wanna take bedsidesign. I initially planned on launching my redesign somewhere in the middle of December but I am just about ready.

Guess what that means friends?

tune in on December 3 for bedsidesign launching as wordpress.org

[photo creds: one | two ]

I’m thrilled to share the story behind this month. I was so pleasantly surprised by how positive this month has been. A daunting task turned into a great learning experience. Are you excited? Here’s a few more things to get you pumped up:

As of Monday, December 3 bedsidesign will use Passionfruit Ads for all ad space. I am EXTREMELY excited about this. Please feel free to book some button swaps, or larger ad space or contact me for product reviews/giveaways or collaborations.

I will be adding a contributor to bedsidesign. I know…this is such a tease. I promise you’ll find out more on Monday.

OH, did I mention I will be using the wordpress.org platform? Hallelujah. No more baby blog! I will finally be able to control things [I’m not a control freak I swear!]. I’m excited to share how I made the transition from wordpress.com to wordpress.org and the friends that helped me along the way. If you are thinking about making the plunge you won’t want to miss out on this!

A new look, new ads, new contributor, new platform – what else am I cooking up? Just a few more blog series. That’s right, I was going to wait until January but I just can’t keep them in the shadows.

Thanks for sticking with me through all of this. Your comments, encouragement and support has helped fuel me this month. xo

Next week when I join this link-up I will finally be able to enter the code that shows all the other awesome bloggers that link up too.

November: R – B – R

Happy November! November means a fresh new month for me to explore my Happiness Project plans. [Community is still on my mind] To be honest I got a little ahead of myself and already started in October. Now I have 1 whole month to dedicate my time to what I’m calling: R – B – R

[original photo by Ian Jones]

So what does that mean?

Refocus: I’ve learned a ton over the past 11 months of consistent blogging. Sometimes when you are in the middle of blogging you just keep going and don’t have time to look back on your previous content. This month I’m going to spend some time looking at my favorite posts, posts bombed, series that need to be tweaked, and where I would like to take bedsidesign in 2013. Before I get into the new year I want to make sure I have a clear vision.

Branding: Along with gaining vision I want the vision of bedsidesign to be clear. I will be launching some new offerings at the end of December and I want to make sure that branding is all squared away. The thought originally seemed odd to “create a brand” but now I know it is essential. This will also flow into the next point.

Redesign: Now this is what I am seriously pumped about. I’m in the middle of creating color palettes, a new logo, some great social media buttons/options, and a new blog layout, as well as making the change from wordpress.com to wordpres.org – I’m growin’ up! I am doing this all through Gab White‘s Web DIY Workshop. Her tutorials are great and I’m totally enjoying myself. A lot of my energy for the month is going into this project. The good thing is all of this really does make me happy, and I think it will make my blog happier, since it will be more Christie. Follow along with what’s inspiring me!

What are you working on for November? Please do me a favor and answer this simple question by leaving me a comment:

What color options do you gravitate to?

Option 1: black / white / gray / pop of color

Option 2: monochromatic pinks

Option 3: black / white / tan / coral

Don’t forget that this is a linkup!

Blog Call: November

The month is almost over. I’m so happy that I was able to feature some amazing bloggers & shops that responded to my call for button swaps. Now I am casting the net and looking for some unique, fun and inspiring blogs and online shops to feature for November!

Today we have a treat! We are talking about parties and this is a topic that I certainly love. After hosting 15 people for Thanksgiving last year I have an itch to plan a holiday dinner party. We don’t have the space to host 15 people now so I’m trying to create an intimate setting and heavily focus on the decor. I’m sharing my party inspiration over at artsocial– think metallics, organic centerpieces and exposed wood. I’m all for mixing styles.

Erin from artsocial back for another round of IN LOVE! Wow, guys. Are the holidays already coming up?? My friends, family, and every store you enter seem to think so… my favorite thing about this time of year? All of the wonderful parties that bring everyone together.

this is part of the in love series by artsocial and bedsidesign

1. Balloons! Well of course my favorite thing about holiday parties – or any parties for that matter – are balloon decorations. I mean they’re what make it a party, yes? Put some balloons in a room. Boom. Party. These epic balloons from Geronimo Balloons should just come live at my house… like all year round.

2. Finger food. So it goes: #1 favorite thing about parties: balloons. #2 favorite thing: delicious, individually-sized snacks. Cute mini donuts need to be at my holiday parties this year. Period.

3. Party pants. Everyone has a pair of party pants, right? Ok they may not be suuuuper short and have sequins on them, but they’re those special pair of pants that make you feel so hawt. Holiday parties give you the opportunity to dress up, wear those party pants, and really sparkle + shine.

4. Gathering. The best part of holiday parties? The bringing-people-together part. Just think of all the people in your life you only see around the holidays… celebrating family and friends, that’s the good stuff. (photo by Anabela Carneiro)

5. Creative decorations. Oh holiday party decor!! No matter what holiday decorations you choose to put up or how elaborate you choose to make them, they always make it feel like the holidays. It’s not Halloween until there’s a pumpkin on the doorstep, and it’s not Christmas until there’s a tree in the living room. Those are the rules, guys. I didn’t write them.

6. Party dranks. I’m a big fan of fun holiday cocktails that capture the taste of the season… or that have tinsel drink stirrers. Either/or.

7. Get out the good stuff. The holidays are for celebrating. Bust out your party pants and fine china. Can you imagine eating off of this bejeweled plate? It’d make my green bean casserole look real good.

Happy holiday party planning, friends!

My Happiness Project

be happy linkup

Today I am publicly sharing my happiness project. Between reading The Happiness Project and linking up every Thursday I knew I wanted to take it one step further. Since everyone’s happiness project is different, my happiness project is going to be aimed toward this blog! Blogging brings me so much joy, so why not?! After a lot of planning I came up with my 12 resolutions I am so thrilled to share them with you:

October: Community: reaching out locally + online

November: Refocus / branding / redesign

December: Ch- ch – changes! bedsidesign launches as a self-hosted blog with paid sponsorships! Wooohoo! + Celebrate 1 year of blogging

January: Focus on social media outlets

February: Love for brands, bloggers, all around L-O-V-E

March: Take risks

April: Add a new staging/styling series

May: Work on a media kit

June: Look for new collaborations with brands/guest posting opportunities

July: Celebrate the progress – reader survey time!

August: Link-up with one of the blogs on my “list” of blogs that I love

September: Learn: sign up for a blog conference/class

October: Rinse, re-evaluate, repeat?

and my 12 commandments

I’m extremely excited for the next few months because a lot of changes are in the works. When I started this blog I was unsure about ads, and the self-hosted world. Now I am ready take that big leap. Thankfully I found the best route for bedsidesign and will be implementing those changes soon! What does that means for you bedsidesigners? Well for starters I won’t be limited like I am now with the templates that I have access to. I will have way more freedom to make this blog really me, and hopefully that makes it a better viewing experience. WordPress.com users: I will be reminding you that starting in December you will need to visit bedsidesign.com instead of viewing through the WordPress.com reader. I hope you will follow me on there! More changes too but I’d like to keep some as a surprise!

Thanks for following me on this journey. I hope to share what I learn along the way. If you are a blogger feel free to join the link-up too! The more the merrier!

The IN LOVE series is such a great way to start off the week. This weekend the hubs and I worked on our home office and I’m sharing my inspiration for designing our shared space over at artsocial <–think blacks, whites, and pops of metallics…oh yeahh!

Hi there, bedsidesigners. I know what you’re thinking: In Love: Office? There’s nothing sexy about offices. OH but there is. Ordinary office supplies no longer have to be ordinary, folks. Shark staple removers, envelopes with glitter, mouse pads that are actually cool! The goodies below are just a few of the office accessories I have a crush on… that’s right, I have a crush on a mouse pad.

in love is a collaborative series with artsocial

1. I love to surround my office space with inspirational shtuff. Little sayings and motivational quotes that keep me pumped and focused are scattered everywhere. This stamp by Eat Pray Create is perfect for a little motivational boost… plus I’ve recently fallen in love with using stamps to personalize thank you letters and other artsocial mailings. Hat tip to you, Eat Pray Create.

2. Looking for a new planner? Poketo has gotcha covered. I have a pretty big office crush on Poketo… like borderline obsession.

3. You know how I said I have motivational quotes and such scattered everywhere in my office? Yup, “scattered” is the perfect word to describe my office. I need this clipboard organization system in the worst way. Perfectly organized inspiration… can you imagine?

4. It should come as no surprise that I LOVE art. Integrating art into my everyday life makes me one happy art lady. Enter: bubblegum paperweight sculptures. So awesome, right? I die. I would purposefully create stacks of messy papers just so I could use these…

5. Every office needs washi tape, yes? There are countless ways to use washi tape in an office. Ok, I may have sealed a rent check with washi tape. I don’t recommend that necessarily, but washi tape adds some extra happiness to just about every piece of mail I send out… and it can really add some pizazz to business cards.

6. I already have an elephant patterned laptop sleeve, so obvi I have to get a matching mouse pad by Slightly Smitten Kitten Designs. I love it so much… maybe too much.

7. I think having great stationery and gift wrap on hand is a sign of adulthood… right now I do not have any stationery or gift wrap. I’m ordering some asap. Sending someone a real live thank you card or gift in the mail has quite an impact. Let’s all send more mail, k? Psst if you have a stationery demand, isavirtue has the supply.

What are some of your favorite office accessories and must-haves?

Check out the other topics we are IN LOVE with. Are you looking for more ways to connect with this series? Head over to our Pinterest board where we pin all our inspiration. Oh and did I mention Erin is a social media wiz? She’s on Twitter +  Facebook + Pinterest + Instagram

The Happiness Project: Community

As I’ve devoured through most of The Happiness Project the idea of community is on my mind. Last week when I read Sandra’s post from Raincoast Cottage I was inspired to write type out some of the thoughts floating around in my head. You see, community is extremely important to me in my personal life, work life, and last but not least blogging life [I don’t really compartmentalize each section of my life-like that but that’s an entirely different topic and maybe future post].

thoughts on community

In Chapter 10 of The Happiness Project Gretchen says,

I picked up a very helpful True Rule from my sister. Elizabeth told me, ‘People succeed in groups.’…I asked her, ‘Does it give you the funny feeling that your pal had such a large success?’ She answered, ‘Well, maybe a bit, but I remind myself that ‘People succeed in groups.’ It’s great for him to have a big success, and his success is also likely to help me to be successful.

That idea may seem bizarre to some but I find it beautiful. Competition can be healthy but I believe community fosters more inspiration. That’s why I was so excited to join up with this link up. Promoting positivity + forming a relationship with other bloggers and readers = something I am totally about, and you know what? It makes me happy.

Malcolm Gladwell shares about a community of Italian immigrants called the Roseto Mystery in his book Outliers – The Story of Success. I remember being so interested when my husband came home one day rambling [in a good way] about the Roseto Mystery. You should definitely check out the book but to summarize the intro tells the story about how despite diet, age, and various other factors this small group of people had a 30 -35% lower death rate than others expected. After a ton of research studies showed that the community that they were a part of played the role in keeping these people happy and healthy.

No one was used to thinking about health in terms of community… They had to appreciate the idea that the values of the world we inhabit and the people we surround ourselves with have a profound effect on who we are.

One of the reasons why my husband and I moved to Syracuse was to be a part of an intentional community. It amazes me how sharing life with others brings me so much joy. I know that may sound like a lot of work, it is. As I get older I find more and more that I am the type of person who likes to recharge alone. Being part of a community pushes my buttons and makes me step out of my comfort zone. But at the end of the day I am happy when I help out a friend, or someone brings me food when I’m under the weather. You also learn to root for others success.

In our culture individualism is a high priority.  The value to apprehend independence is part of the fabric of our society.   My personal goals, the things that satisfy me and my right to pursue them are supposed to take priority when I’m making decisions. In many ways we worship our freedom to express independence without constraints.  We think self-reliance is the strongest form of being human.  The primary reality is me; the person. In America we are conditioned and shaped by this hidden or maybe not so hidden worldview of individualism. -Dan White, Jr. Individualism and Community.

Through this link up, Blog Brunch, and reaching out to others in the blogosphere I’ve found a great sense of community online. I find joy when I see fellow bloggers working on collaborations, or read a post that I inspires me. Instead of being individualistic and wishing I came up with that, having a sense of outward thinking promotes inspiration. Hence the group success. Even though I am not done with the book and have yet to nail done my particular Happiness Project I am declaring October a month to focus on community – locally, in my work relationships, and in the blogging world. Whether you are a Syracuse local, a blogger or someone who believes in the value of community feel free to drop a line or leave a comment. Don’t forget to check out the other bloggers that link up!

October: Promoting a Blogging Community

I’m so excited to share with you some exciting new bloggers & shops. I put a call out and the response was really encouraging! Today I am pleased to introduce you to the new October buttons that are featured on the sidebar [look to the right and scroll down]. I decided to ask some of my favorite questions to get to know these awesome ladies a little bit more.

First up is Emily‘s etsy shop Emmyton’s.

Welcome to Emmyton's, a little handmade shop.

What’s your favorite thing to do in your city or about your city?
Wichita is quite diverse, my hubby and I find that there is always a new restaurant to try, music events to see and then there are the museums and parks to visit.

Why do you blog?
I decided to open an etsy shop, Emmyton’s, because of the free time that being unemployed left me with.  I wanted to do something with all the creative energy I have, it’s the perfect outlet and maybe will bring in a bit of money someday.

Can you share a recent favorite read or find (could be music, a blog etc.)?
I’m not big for magazines but my current favorite is Whole Living, I love the natural health information and recipes they include because there is always something for me to try or learn about.  The days that it comes in the mail are very exciting!

What is an interest, or something you’re passionate about?
I absolutely adore dogs, they do so much for us and don’t always get the love and compassion that they deserve.  So I tend to support rescue groups, humane societies, bloggers and authors who work tirelessly for animals.

What is on your bedside table?

Besides my alarm clock and a lamp I have a sound machine on my bedside table.  I know that sounds strange but I love falling asleep to the sound of rain or the ocean.  Those are my two favorite settings.  Believe when I say I never use the one that sounds like a heartbeat, that’s just creepy!

What are five things you couldn’t live without?
My hubby, our dogs, Cocoa Dolce Chocolates, my iPhone and a good workout.

Next is one of my Happiness Project/Blog Brunch buddies – Alyssa from All Things Beautiful.

alyssa from all things beautiful

What’s your favorite thing to do in your city or about your city?
I love living in Los Angeles because there is always something fun and interesting to do! You will never get bored in L.A.!

Why do you blog?
Writing helps me process and share what I’m learning as I go through life. My blog is a creative outlet where I write about life, love, and trying to see the beauty in everything.

Can you share a recent favorite read or find (could be music, a blog etc.)?
I’m absolutely obsessed with Ellie Goulding‘s new single “Anything Could Happen” and can’t wait to get her new album!

What is an interest, or something you’re passionate about?
In honor of my grandmother who passed away from Alzheimer’s disease in 2008, I’ve lead a team for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s for the last three years. This year, we raised over $1,000 towards the cause!

What is on your bedside table?
Junk, mostly! But also the handwritten love note from my husband that I read just moments before our wedding ceremony!

What are five things you couldn’t live without?
Prayer, Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm, Hand lotion, Hugs from my husband, Chocolate
Trina Lambert is another lover of design and typography and blogs over here.

What’s your favorite thing to do in your city or about your city?
Richmond, Virginia is a highly creative and innovative city. The thriving arts scene here plays a huge role in this. It embraces two of my favorite things — design and music.

Why do you blog?
I am an introvert so it’s a good medium to get my voice out there. I allows me to share my thoughts, knowledge and hopefully — along the way — inspire people that have the same passions as I do. I enjoy hearing others insight and opinions too … meeting new people with like-minded interests.

Can you share a recent favorite read or find (could be music, a blog etc.)?
I recently read the book Blink and really enjoyed it. It gives insightful information involving mental processes and the role it plays in making judgements and quick decisions. You would find it interesting if you were a lover of psychology and the in-depth workings of the human mind, like me.

What is an interest, or something you’re passionate about?
If you check out my blog, you will find that I am pretty passionate about four things: design (including typography), music, my family and dogs. Although my family ranks first in my life, when it comes to the others, I am equally obsessed. I pour my heart and soul into these interests of mine and attribute them to my happiness.

What is on your bedside table?
My phone, alarm clock and lamp. Stacked on the shelf underneath are about 8 books that I have read a quarter to half of the way through. My attention span — along with the ability to get bored with one thing pretty easily — does not allow me to make it through reading many books in their entirety.

What are five things you couldn’t live without?
My family, My dog, Music, Design, Sunshine

YAY another one of my Happiness Project friends is featured, Louise from Laid Off Mom.

What’s your favorite thing to do in your city or about your city?
When I have the chance, I like to head to the Torrey Pines State Beach or Miramar lake…either for a run or to just stroll and think…the views are breathtaking, and it helps to clear my head.

Why do you blog?
This has been a recurrent question…one that has been on my mind a lot lately. I started blogging because I was laid off last year, and I wanted an outlet where I could share my thoughts, my ideas and my creative side. From day one, it has always been my goal to turn my blog into a source of income…one that would be able to help support my family, while at the same time allow me to be home with my girls…to give them a solid upbringing. It’s been almost a full year of blogging and I can’t imagine doing anything else at the moment. The gears in my head are constantly turning, and I feel like I have much more to say and do, than I have time to post for. I live and breathe my blog…it’s my own lil’ nook in this vast blogiverse, and I love it! It’s also amazing the amount of friends I’ve made (Christie included!) who inspire me and motivate me on a daily basis. I couldn’t have asked for anything more!

Can you share a recent favorite read or find (could be music, a blog etc.)?
I’m gonna name 2 things: hehe 1) Miss Christina Perri & 2) this blogpost.

I love her music! I got a chance to see Christina Perri sing live last year, and she is beyond amazing. When you see her in person…she is not only beautiful, but she sings from her heart. Every note she belts out is filled w/ so much emotion…you can tell that she loves what she does, and she gives it her all.

And the blog post I mentioned earlier, talks about how finding your blogging voice isn’t as easy as creating it…it has to come to you. I feel like I’ve found my voice this year, and it’s helped me to write better and uncover a lot of great things about myself and this blogging journey of mine. Great advice!

What is an interest, or something you’re passionate about?
It’s no secret that I’m ooober supportive of being authentic. Finding what your good at, what you love to do, combining the two and creating a life around it. I only have one life, and I intend to live it my way…the best way I know how!

What is on your bedside table?
My nook, my red journal, a pen, and the baby monitor (my girls are 3.5 & 5, and I still wanna make sure they’re sleeping soundly and are safe)…I check on them at least once during the night still =)

What are five things you couldn’t live without?
CHOCOLATE, my journal (which I take everywhere), baby wipes, chapstick, iphone.

Last but certainly not least is Sabrine from Sabje.

What’s your favorite thing to do in your city or about your city?
My favourite thing to do in Delft is enjoying the sun from a sidewalk cafe with a delicious cup of coffee or tea.

Why do you blog?
I blog because I love writing and sharing experiences.

Can you share a recent favourite read or find (could be music, a blog etc.)?
I recently started reading books by Stephanie Perkins and I am really enjoying her writing style.

What is an interest, or something you’re passionate about?
I am very passionate about food, I adore baking and cooking but also like to visit different places to taste different kinds of food.

What is on your bedside table?
My bedside table is covered with books, most days you will also find an empty cup of tea.

What are five things you couldn’t live without?
Books, My kitchen, coffee, tea and of course the internet.
There you have it! Erin from artsocial wasn’t featured in this roundup since she is on a road trip as you know. Sara from Beautifully Contained answered these questions in her first guest post for the DIY series. Please check out their blogs and send them some love. I’m super excited for October and the awesome things ahead for bedsidesign!

IN LOVE: Road Trips

Can you believe it is OCTOBER?! Wow, the months are flying by. Today is our third week of the IN LOVE series and this topic is something I am very familiar with. Check out the things that I love about road trips over at artsocial.

Sooo guess what I’m doing this week… if you said going on a road trip, you are correct sir. After attending a fab wedding last Saturday in Albuquerque, my boyfriend and I are goin’ on a little road trip through different parts of New Mexico… that’s the plan anyway. In honor of this grand adventure, I thought I’d share all of my faaaavorite road trip stuff with you.

road trip roundup by artsocial

1. Friends, laughs, cruisin’ along with the radio bumpin’, road trips are F-U-N… unless you’re in a horror movie.

2. The open road. There’s something so calming about taking long drives. I love looking out at the scenery, contemplating the journey ahead, and letting go of the day-to-day… it’s as if just because I’m going somewhere, I’ll be learning something. That’s exciting.

3. You can’t have a road trip without awesome tasty beverages to drink along the way! Gotta stay hydrated… might as well indulge in a green tea frappuccino, yes?

4. Speaking of indulging, road trips are always a great excuse to eat allll of the things I normally never eat. Fries? Fried chicken sandwiches? Well there’s nothing else to eat out here, I have to eat fast food.

5. I don’t know what it is, but I LOVE staying at hotels – especially if they have a pool. I don’t even get in the pool necessarily – in fact, I rarely do. I don’t want to do my hair again, ya feel me? Just knowing there’s a wonderful, glistening pool that I can use at anytime makes me feel very abundant. Weird, I know.

6. One of my favorite parts of road tripping is stopping at random diners. I think it’s because it reminds me of being in a movie… important scenes always seem to take place in diners. There will be a confrontation or an awakening or some crazy plot twist… plus there’s pie.

7. Hands down the best part of the road trip: the adventure. Not knowing what you’ll see, where you’ll eat, who you’ll come across? Now that’s the good stuff.

What do youuu love about road trips?

The Happiness Project: Week 3

Well kids this week my copy of The Happiness Project came! I dove right in and all the praise is well deserved. I’m really enjoying it. I’m equally loving this link up so if you are a blogger you should seriously consider joining!

be happy linkup by artsocial

Even though I just started the book it doesn’t mean that I have to wait until I’m done reading to be happy! So often I feel like people [myself included!] procrastinate on happiness because they are waiting for a special timeframe when life is easier and it’ll just miraculously fit into their schedule. Believe me, we’ll all be waiting a very long time! I love this quote by Walt Whitman about happiness. There’s nothing wrong with planning but if you are so busy always planning your life you’ll miss it.

walt whitman quote by christie jones

My mom called yesterday and the topic of happiness came up. She was asking me what would make me happy?

It’s great because I feel like I’m in a really positive place. I’ve been stepping out in ways that I haven’t before. I am intentionally working towards certain goals. I think if I was in a negative place I would be quicker to make irrational and unrealistic goals. I think personality also plays a key role in all of this, and I loved this post on the Alt blog about the 12 most striking tendencies of creative people. I think my favorite was #12 – Aren’t Alone. Through this linkup and other blogging networks I’m finally feeling like I’m not alone is this big blogging world, and that makes me happy.

One place that I would love to network and meet other awesome creative people is at Alt. I’ve followed Alt for a while and always wanted to go. By the time I realized they would be in NY they were sold out…bummer. I’m hopinggggg [pretty please with cherries on top!] that I win this free ticket because that would seriously make me HAPPY! For blogging inspiration and business advice check out the new Alt blog.
