A Big Announcement About bedsidesign

I’m amazed that November is almost over. You know what that means – I’m wrapping up my month of refocusing – branding – and redesign. To be honest I’m so ready to move on from this month [in a good way]. I’ve learned a lot about myself, what makes me happy as a blogger and where I wanna take bedsidesign. I initially planned on launching my redesign somewhere in the middle of December but I am just about ready.

Guess what that means friends?

tune in on December 3 for bedsidesign launching as wordpress.org

[photo creds: one | two ]

I’m thrilled to share the story behind this month. I was so pleasantly surprised by how positive this month has been. A daunting task turned into a great learning experience. Are you excited? Here’s a few more things to get you pumped up:

As of Monday, December 3 bedsidesign will use Passionfruit Ads for all ad space. I am EXTREMELY excited about this. Please feel free to book some button swaps, or larger ad space or contact me for product reviews/giveaways or collaborations.

I will be adding a contributor to bedsidesign. I know…this is such a tease. I promise you’ll find out more on Monday.

OH, did I mention I will be using the wordpress.org platform? Hallelujah. No more baby blog! I will finally be able to control things [I’m not a control freak I swear!]. I’m excited to share how I made the transition from wordpress.com to wordpress.org and the friends that helped me along the way. If you are thinking about making the plunge you won’t want to miss out on this!

A new look, new ads, new contributor, new platform – what else am I cooking up? Just a few more blog series. That’s right, I was going to wait until January but I just can’t keep them in the shadows.

Thanks for sticking with me through all of this. Your comments, encouragement and support has helped fuel me this month. xo

Next week when I join this link-up I will finally be able to enter the code that shows all the other awesome bloggers that link up too.

Apartment Tour: Living Room / Dining Room Combo

Have you started decorating for the holidays yet? We just started to. I decided before I show a full-fledged decorated-for-the-holidays room I should probably show you all the progress we have made in our living room/dining room. Remember how I said our bathroom was in progress? Well, our whole apartment is. We had to be intentional and creative to transform a 12′- 4″ x 17′ room into dual entertainment place. Let’s hang out together [virtually of course] in our cozy combo room:

The Joneses living room/dining room combo.Using our larger couch as the divider we were able to create an illusion of two spaces. However, when we have a group of friends over some can sit and watch the TV from the table while others can occupy the couches. Oh yeah, those couches cost us less than $450 with taxes and delivery! Mixing ornate details like our mirror with a modern pendant light from Target (only $20!) adds dimension to our eclectic style. A set of chevron placemats stand out on our black table.

The Joneses small dining room space

Can you tell we are readers, and musicians? Gotta always have the essentials handy! That’s what makes it a living room. I love my thrifted hexagon end tables – yeah only $5 each. Mixing in our love for typography with our apartment means our initials become a statement and a comfy “@” pillow adds both comfort and style. Oh and we are not minimalists when it comes to pillows…that’s on the to-do list.

The Joneses living room books.living room small spaces apartment tourOur happy Hobstr terrarium is alive and well. A cute, little sea otter keeps it company on our IKEA Hyllis shelves. Some DIY ombre artwork adds a splash of color to our black and white room. I’m kinda feeling like repainting them to match the minimalist artwork I recently fell in love with. And lastly, our little gallery wall is starting to expand.

What’cha think? Feel free to ask me where we got this or that. I was delaying this post thinking the weather might get nicer so the lighting might turn out better – but who am I kidding? I live in Syracuse and winter is coming.

DIY: 2013 Geometric Calendar

Before we know it 2013 will be here. In an effort to be prepared for the new year I would like to share a simple & quick [took me all of 10 minutes] DIY geometric calendar. We are working on our office and I’m sticking with a black and white theme with metallic accessories. I fell in love with this 2013 printable calendar from Natasha Mileshina‘s etsy shop. The first step would be to purchase the calendar.
geometric 2013 calendarOnce you have the calendar you can print it out. You will also need to gather some supplies.

supplies to make a DIY calendar

Cut the calendar months into the size that you would like. Use the ruler to keep your cuts straight. Secure the calendar month to the cardstock with strips of electrical tape [washi tape will work too]. I wanted the tape to look a bit more thrown on together but you can use precise pieces if that’s more your style. Use both sides of the cardstock to conserve paper. I put Jan/Feb on one, March/April on another and so on.

DIY geometric calendar

Look at all the shapes! Once you tape all your months together use your lil binder clip to fasten them together. Behold:

DIY geometric calendarIt is as simple as that! 2013 you lookin’ so fly!

P.S. If you make one I would LOVEEE to see it.

A Little Soul-Searching: Refocus

When I created the monthly goals for my happiness project I didn’t realize how much of November would be spent “soul-searching”. Before I launched this blog I brainstormed names, design concepts, blog content and thought about the type of blog that I wanted to produce. I’ll admit, in the beginning I had no idea what I was doing. I knew the general things – like how to create a post, take and edit some photos and thankfully knew my way around social media. What I didn’t know was how to produce content on a steady basis, whether anyone would even read my blog, and where it would take me. All I  had was an idea of inspiring others and I ran [or in reality crawled] with it.

Saturday was the “Finding Your Blog’s Voice” topic for Blog Brunch. This couldn’t have come at a better time. It always makes me happy to connect with people pursuing their passions [hello Be Happy linkup peeps!]. It is great to be inspired by others. I’ve also realized where I may fit in this great big blogging world. I’m not a fashion expert, an interior designer, a high rolla blogger with a huge wallet [more on this soon], someone who lives on the west coast [lucky you if you do!] or in Manhattan or Brooklyn. I’m not overly girly, but I love to paint my nails and wear sparkles. I am a tattooed lover of minimalist design [be it letterpress or interiors] who has to work a day-job. I desperately want to cultivate a place to share what inspires me and hear what inspires you. Is that okay? Will you journey with me?

I am a biggg fan of turquoise. From jewelry to home decor I think this color can look extremely retro or nice and modern. I tend to lean more towards a blue turquoise instead a green one. I love pairing this with oranges, or even taupe. What do you think of turquoise, are you a fan?

The IN LOVE series is such a great way to start off the week. This weekend the hubs and I worked on our home office and I’m sharing my inspiration for designing our shared space over at artsocial <–think blacks, whites, and pops of metallics…oh yeahh!

Hi there, bedsidesigners. I know what you’re thinking: In Love: Office? There’s nothing sexy about offices. OH but there is. Ordinary office supplies no longer have to be ordinary, folks. Shark staple removers, envelopes with glitter, mouse pads that are actually cool! The goodies below are just a few of the office accessories I have a crush on… that’s right, I have a crush on a mouse pad.

in love is a collaborative series with artsocial

1. I love to surround my office space with inspirational shtuff. Little sayings and motivational quotes that keep me pumped and focused are scattered everywhere. This stamp by Eat Pray Create is perfect for a little motivational boost… plus I’ve recently fallen in love with using stamps to personalize thank you letters and other artsocial mailings. Hat tip to you, Eat Pray Create.

2. Looking for a new planner? Poketo has gotcha covered. I have a pretty big office crush on Poketo… like borderline obsession.

3. You know how I said I have motivational quotes and such scattered everywhere in my office? Yup, “scattered” is the perfect word to describe my office. I need this clipboard organization system in the worst way. Perfectly organized inspiration… can you imagine?

4. It should come as no surprise that I LOVE art. Integrating art into my everyday life makes me one happy art lady. Enter: bubblegum paperweight sculptures. So awesome, right? I die. I would purposefully create stacks of messy papers just so I could use these…

5. Every office needs washi tape, yes? There are countless ways to use washi tape in an office. Ok, I may have sealed a rent check with washi tape. I don’t recommend that necessarily, but washi tape adds some extra happiness to just about every piece of mail I send out… and it can really add some pizazz to business cards.

6. I already have an elephant patterned laptop sleeve, so obvi I have to get a matching mouse pad by Slightly Smitten Kitten Designs. I love it so much… maybe too much.

7. I think having great stationery and gift wrap on hand is a sign of adulthood… right now I do not have any stationery or gift wrap. I’m ordering some asap. Sending someone a real live thank you card or gift in the mail has quite an impact. Let’s all send more mail, k? Psst if you have a stationery demand, isavirtue has the supply.

What are some of your favorite office accessories and must-haves?

October: Promoting a Blogging Community

I’m so excited to share with you some exciting new bloggers & shops. I put a call out and the response was really encouraging! Today I am pleased to introduce you to the new October buttons that are featured on the sidebar [look to the right and scroll down]. I decided to ask some of my favorite questions to get to know these awesome ladies a little bit more.

First up is Emily‘s etsy shop Emmyton’s.

Welcome to Emmyton's, a little handmade shop.

What’s your favorite thing to do in your city or about your city?
Wichita is quite diverse, my hubby and I find that there is always a new restaurant to try, music events to see and then there are the museums and parks to visit.

Why do you blog?
I decided to open an etsy shop, Emmyton’s, because of the free time that being unemployed left me with.  I wanted to do something with all the creative energy I have, it’s the perfect outlet and maybe will bring in a bit of money someday.

Can you share a recent favorite read or find (could be music, a blog etc.)?
I’m not big for magazines but my current favorite is Whole Living, I love the natural health information and recipes they include because there is always something for me to try or learn about.  The days that it comes in the mail are very exciting!

What is an interest, or something you’re passionate about?
I absolutely adore dogs, they do so much for us and don’t always get the love and compassion that they deserve.  So I tend to support rescue groups, humane societies, bloggers and authors who work tirelessly for animals.

What is on your bedside table?

Besides my alarm clock and a lamp I have a sound machine on my bedside table.  I know that sounds strange but I love falling asleep to the sound of rain or the ocean.  Those are my two favorite settings.  Believe when I say I never use the one that sounds like a heartbeat, that’s just creepy!

What are five things you couldn’t live without?
My hubby, our dogs, Cocoa Dolce Chocolates, my iPhone and a good workout.

Next is one of my Happiness Project/Blog Brunch buddies – Alyssa from All Things Beautiful.

alyssa from all things beautiful

What’s your favorite thing to do in your city or about your city?
I love living in Los Angeles because there is always something fun and interesting to do! You will never get bored in L.A.!

Why do you blog?
Writing helps me process and share what I’m learning as I go through life. My blog is a creative outlet where I write about life, love, and trying to see the beauty in everything.

Can you share a recent favorite read or find (could be music, a blog etc.)?
I’m absolutely obsessed with Ellie Goulding‘s new single “Anything Could Happen” and can’t wait to get her new album!

What is an interest, or something you’re passionate about?
In honor of my grandmother who passed away from Alzheimer’s disease in 2008, I’ve lead a team for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s for the last three years. This year, we raised over $1,000 towards the cause!

What is on your bedside table?
Junk, mostly! But also the handwritten love note from my husband that I read just moments before our wedding ceremony!

What are five things you couldn’t live without?
Prayer, Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm, Hand lotion, Hugs from my husband, Chocolate
Trina Lambert is another lover of design and typography and blogs over here.

What’s your favorite thing to do in your city or about your city?
Richmond, Virginia is a highly creative and innovative city. The thriving arts scene here plays a huge role in this. It embraces two of my favorite things — design and music.

Why do you blog?
I am an introvert so it’s a good medium to get my voice out there. I allows me to share my thoughts, knowledge and hopefully — along the way — inspire people that have the same passions as I do. I enjoy hearing others insight and opinions too … meeting new people with like-minded interests.

Can you share a recent favorite read or find (could be music, a blog etc.)?
I recently read the book Blink and really enjoyed it. It gives insightful information involving mental processes and the role it plays in making judgements and quick decisions. You would find it interesting if you were a lover of psychology and the in-depth workings of the human mind, like me.

What is an interest, or something you’re passionate about?
If you check out my blog, you will find that I am pretty passionate about four things: design (including typography), music, my family and dogs. Although my family ranks first in my life, when it comes to the others, I am equally obsessed. I pour my heart and soul into these interests of mine and attribute them to my happiness.

What is on your bedside table?
My phone, alarm clock and lamp. Stacked on the shelf underneath are about 8 books that I have read a quarter to half of the way through. My attention span — along with the ability to get bored with one thing pretty easily — does not allow me to make it through reading many books in their entirety.

What are five things you couldn’t live without?
My family, My dog, Music, Design, Sunshine

YAY another one of my Happiness Project friends is featured, Louise from Laid Off Mom.

What’s your favorite thing to do in your city or about your city?
When I have the chance, I like to head to the Torrey Pines State Beach or Miramar lake…either for a run or to just stroll and think…the views are breathtaking, and it helps to clear my head.

Why do you blog?
This has been a recurrent question…one that has been on my mind a lot lately. I started blogging because I was laid off last year, and I wanted an outlet where I could share my thoughts, my ideas and my creative side. From day one, it has always been my goal to turn my blog into a source of income…one that would be able to help support my family, while at the same time allow me to be home with my girls…to give them a solid upbringing. It’s been almost a full year of blogging and I can’t imagine doing anything else at the moment. The gears in my head are constantly turning, and I feel like I have much more to say and do, than I have time to post for. I live and breathe my blog…it’s my own lil’ nook in this vast blogiverse, and I love it! It’s also amazing the amount of friends I’ve made (Christie included!) who inspire me and motivate me on a daily basis. I couldn’t have asked for anything more!

Can you share a recent favorite read or find (could be music, a blog etc.)?
I’m gonna name 2 things: hehe 1) Miss Christina Perri & 2) this blogpost.

I love her music! I got a chance to see Christina Perri sing live last year, and she is beyond amazing. When you see her in person…she is not only beautiful, but she sings from her heart. Every note she belts out is filled w/ so much emotion…you can tell that she loves what she does, and she gives it her all.

And the blog post I mentioned earlier, talks about how finding your blogging voice isn’t as easy as creating it…it has to come to you. I feel like I’ve found my voice this year, and it’s helped me to write better and uncover a lot of great things about myself and this blogging journey of mine. Great advice!

What is an interest, or something you’re passionate about?
It’s no secret that I’m ooober supportive of being authentic. Finding what your good at, what you love to do, combining the two and creating a life around it. I only have one life, and I intend to live it my way…the best way I know how!

What is on your bedside table?
My nook, my red journal, a pen, and the baby monitor (my girls are 3.5 & 5, and I still wanna make sure they’re sleeping soundly and are safe)…I check on them at least once during the night still =)

What are five things you couldn’t live without?
CHOCOLATE, my journal (which I take everywhere), baby wipes, chapstick, iphone.

Last but certainly not least is Sabrine from Sabje.

What’s your favorite thing to do in your city or about your city?
My favourite thing to do in Delft is enjoying the sun from a sidewalk cafe with a delicious cup of coffee or tea.

Why do you blog?
I blog because I love writing and sharing experiences.

Can you share a recent favourite read or find (could be music, a blog etc.)?
I recently started reading books by Stephanie Perkins and I am really enjoying her writing style.

What is an interest, or something you’re passionate about?
I am very passionate about food, I adore baking and cooking but also like to visit different places to taste different kinds of food.

What is on your bedside table?
My bedside table is covered with books, most days you will also find an empty cup of tea.

What are five things you couldn’t live without?
Books, My kitchen, coffee, tea and of course the internet.
There you have it! Erin from artsocial wasn’t featured in this roundup since she is on a road trip as you know. Sara from Beautifully Contained answered these questions in her first guest post for the DIY series. Please check out their blogs and send them some love. I’m super excited for October and the awesome things ahead for bedsidesign!

Fall is here and I am thrilled! Bring on the pumpkins, spices, and cozy clothes! Erin from artsocial is here with us sharing her favorite things about this time of year and I’m over at artsocial today sharing mine!

Well hello again! So happy to be back for round two of the IN LOVE series… this time we’re focusing on all of those autumnal goodies that make it easier to say adios to summer and helllooo to fall.

in love fall roundup by artsocial

1. Fall in Colorado is pretty magical. The trees turn gorgeous colors and there’s a crisp smell to the air that reminds me of fall activities – going back to school, picking out pumpkins, walking through crunchy leaves. You can really feel the seasons change here in Denver.

2. Jackets!! The crisp fall air means – hallelujah! – it’s jacket season. Wearing a jacket or blazer makes me feel instantly cute + professional and ready for my day… one time I put a blazer on over my pajamas for a Skype meeting. Totally rocked it. The blazer meant business and they were none the wiser to my old pajama bottoms.

3. One of my favorite fall activities is baking. Chocolate chip pumpkin bread is my specialty. OH yeah.

4. My second favorite fall activity is drinking warm beverages (that’s a legit fall activity, right?). I’ve never tried it, but I’m pretty intrigued by this earl grey hot chocolate… what do you think? Yay or nay?

5. I get cold easily. Fall is the best excuse ever to be cozy (and much better than winter when I’m required to wear my marshmallow man winter coat to survive… not cute). Blankets! Scarves! Sweaters! Bring it on… chances are I’m probably a little chilly right now. I’m that girl who carries a cardigan with her EVERYWHERE just in case.

6. Oh I love these Madewell boots. They need to be on ma feets… and I won’t take them off till spring thaw.

7. Oh Alby, you’re so wise. When the seasons change I become extra reflective about where I’ve been and where I’m going… What was I doing last year at this time? What do I want to be doing next fall? The beginning of a new season is like a tabula rasa, a fresh start, a chance to leave behind the things that aren’t working and focus on the things you do want. What are you imagining for yourself this fall?

See you next week, friends!

Local Peek: Witty Wicks

I love Syracuse like whoa!

One of the reasons is because of the amazingly eclectic and talented people who are all doing what they love. I’ve been searching for soy candles for quite some time. I am always blown away by how expensive they are and how most of the time they don’t smell like anything. I overheard that someone sold handmade soy candles at the Regional Market in Syracuse. I figured I would check it out [ and so I dragged Ian there last weekend. Spilled a milkshake all over me on the way there getting milk in my hair and all down my silk shirt. By the time we got to the market it started to torrential downpour. Needless to say we were drenched and I said bye-bye to my straightened hair].

Witty Wicks receives my “bedsidesign” stamp of approval. I wish that technology was further advanced so that there were scratch n’ sniff blogs – okay that’s kinda weird but seriously, these candles are where it’s at! They smell amazing, look super cute and burn beautifully. My apartment totally smells like fall with these lil suckers lit. Aubrey the owner was nice enough to answer some questions and shares how she got started with soy candles!

witty wicks soy based candles syracuse ny
bedsidesign: How did you get started making soy candles?

Aubrey: I decided to make candles and started out with traditional paraffin wax. I spent about two hours melting the wax and pouring a few candles. At the end of two hours I had a terrible headache, my stomach hurt and I had spilled wax all over my kitchen. I threw out the big block of wax I had left, threw out the pan I had used and went to bed. The next day I started searching for alternatives. I figured if just making the candles was giving me a headache and a stomach ache I certainly could not sell them to anyone. So I researched the wax options and the scent options and came up with a great combo! Soy Wax and Essential Oils. The Candles don’t release any toxins or chemicals into the air so no headaches!! You wont get any black on your walls or ceiling either, big bonus.

bedsidesign: Can the glass be reused? Can the glass be returned to have you reuse it for new candles?
Aubrey: You sure can! I will take back the Large round or Large Square jars and give you a Dollar off your next purchase. One of the great things about the Soy Wax is that it cleans up so easily. When you are done burning your candle you can soak it in hot water and clean the jar out. The labels come off and you are able to reuse the jars.

bedsidesign: What’s your favorite thing to do in your city (or about your city)?

Aubrey: In my former life I worked as a professional actor. After being swept off my feet by my now husband while living in NYC we returned to Syracuse to raise a family. I am so grateful that our city has a thriving theater community. I am able to fulfill my passion for the stage while still being a mom and an entrepreneur. I love attending and performing in local theater. I am a proud board member for Rarely Done Productions a wonderful local Black Box theater.

bedsidesign: Can you share a recent favorite read or find?
Aubrey: I am in the process of moving and building a new home and I stumbled across this blog/website http://thejoyfulorganizer.com/ I not only love all of the packing ideas but just the organizing ideas are amazing. I am a little bit of a neat freak so this site just sings to that part of me.

bedsidesign: What is on your bedside table?
Aubrey: I keep my kids baby books on my bedside table that way if they have done something memorable I can write it down. I was slacking on the updates so about a year ago I put their books in my nightstand drawer and I am happy to say their books are all up to date!

bedsidesign: What are five things you couldn’t live without?
My Family
Alone Time, even if it’s spent locked in the bathroom.
Morning walk/jog with my neighbor
The ability to perform in local theater and be creative

Witty Wicks is located at Shed E every Saturday at the Regional Market. If you are in Syracuse I suggest stopping by!
