Dates on the Cheap: Get FESTIVE

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. One of the many things that I love about this time of year is how lively a city can look decorated for the holidays. Syracuse sure does clean up nice with all the lights.
Ian and I were due for a mini-date and we like usual were a bit strapped for cash. We planned to be “out” during an afternoon and pretty much winged the whole date. Luckily we had a blast and I think you may too.

Find out where/when your city or town will have a decorated Christmas tree. Bundle up if you are in a chilly place [like Syracuse!] and pack a camera if you want. Syracuse is great because they also BLAST epic Christmas music right in Clinton Square – where the tree is set up. We could have also gone ice skating but we were being a bit lazy.

Stroll around linking arms. Talk about your Christmas plans. The key to this date is to talk & see. If you get cold have your significant give you a hug. Caution: I wouldn’t suggest this for a first day. Just sayin’! Now, I suggest after you freeze your butts off to make a trip to your local cafe and order a hot chocolate, coffee or tea. Since I was in need of a little caffeine boost before we saw the tree we went to the Downtown Cafe Kubal location and ordered the most amazing mocha and pumpkin spiced latte. Check out my Instagram feed for the fancy picture of our lattes.

Alyssa from All Things Beautiful has some great cheap date ideas as well! [Today she’s talking all about exploring the historic district of your city – I love this!]

P.S. This is my last post using wordpress.com! It’s a little sad, but I’m onto bigger and better things. Stay tuned for the big reveal on Monday!

A Big Announcement About bedsidesign

I’m amazed that November is almost over. You know what that means – I’m wrapping up my month of refocusing – branding – and redesign. To be honest I’m so ready to move on from this month [in a good way]. I’ve learned a lot about myself, what makes me happy as a blogger and where I wanna take bedsidesign. I initially planned on launching my redesign somewhere in the middle of December but I am just about ready.

Guess what that means friends?

tune in on December 3 for bedsidesign launching as wordpress.org

[photo creds: one | two ]

I’m thrilled to share the story behind this month. I was so pleasantly surprised by how positive this month has been. A daunting task turned into a great learning experience. Are you excited? Here’s a few more things to get you pumped up:

As of Monday, December 3 bedsidesign will use Passionfruit Ads for all ad space. I am EXTREMELY excited about this. Please feel free to book some button swaps, or larger ad space or contact me for product reviews/giveaways or collaborations.

I will be adding a contributor to bedsidesign. I know…this is such a tease. I promise you’ll find out more on Monday.

OH, did I mention I will be using the wordpress.org platform? Hallelujah. No more baby blog! I will finally be able to control things [I’m not a control freak I swear!]. I’m excited to share how I made the transition from wordpress.com to wordpress.org and the friends that helped me along the way. If you are thinking about making the plunge you won’t want to miss out on this!

A new look, new ads, new contributor, new platform – what else am I cooking up? Just a few more blog series. That’s right, I was going to wait until January but I just can’t keep them in the shadows.

Thanks for sticking with me through all of this. Your comments, encouragement and support has helped fuel me this month. xo

Next week when I join this link-up I will finally be able to enter the code that shows all the other awesome bloggers that link up too.

Apartment Tour: Living Room / Dining Room Combo

Have you started decorating for the holidays yet? We just started to. I decided before I show a full-fledged decorated-for-the-holidays room I should probably show you all the progress we have made in our living room/dining room. Remember how I said our bathroom was in progress? Well, our whole apartment is. We had to be intentional and creative to transform a 12′- 4″ x 17′ room into dual entertainment place. Let’s hang out together [virtually of course] in our cozy combo room:

The Joneses living room/dining room combo.Using our larger couch as the divider we were able to create an illusion of two spaces. However, when we have a group of friends over some can sit and watch the TV from the table while others can occupy the couches. Oh yeah, those couches cost us less than $450 with taxes and delivery! Mixing ornate details like our mirror with a modern pendant light from Target (only $20!) adds dimension to our eclectic style. A set of chevron placemats stand out on our black table.

The Joneses small dining room space

Can you tell we are readers, and musicians? Gotta always have the essentials handy! That’s what makes it a living room. I love my thrifted hexagon end tables – yeah only $5 each. Mixing in our love for typography with our apartment means our initials become a statement and a comfy “@” pillow adds both comfort and style. Oh and we are not minimalists when it comes to pillows…that’s on the to-do list.

Some DIY ombre artwork adds a splash of color to our black and white room. I’m kinda feeling like repainting them to match the minimalist artwork I recently fell in love with. And lastly, our little gallery wall is starting to expand.

What’cha think? Feel free to ask me where we got this or that. I was delaying this post thinking the weather might get nicer so the lighting might turn out better – but who am I kidding? I live in Syracuse and winter is coming.

IN LOVE: “Hipster” Christmas!

I hope you all had an amazing Thanksgiving holiday. Check out my facebook page to see the amazing turkey my brother [who is a chef] prepared. It was delicious. We had a quiet, stress-free, fancy adult dinner party with my two brothers. Four people = totally manageable and LOADS of leftovers!

As we ate dinner we watched National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation – a classic in our family. We quoted all the lines, laughed so hard that some of us cried [okay just me but whatevs]. We always loved Clark Griswold’s Moose Mugs and I was thrilled to see them for sale at Urban Outfitters. It also dawned on me that they would be ideal for a Hipster Christmas. Here’s a guide so have yourself, A Merry Hipster Christmas!

in love: hipster christmas by bedsidesignone: It would not be a party without Clark’s Moose Mugs – the inspiration behind this Hipster Christmas party. Now all you need is some spiked eggnog.

two: Last year we hosted an ugly sweater party right after Thanksgiving. It was hysterical. Awful felted Christmas tree zippers, shoulder pads fit for a linebacker, and sequins, sparkles, and knitted Christmas carollers galore! This is a book all about rockin’ an ugly knit.

three: The perfect Christmas ornament throwback.

four: Home Alone – how you’ve warmed our hearts and filled our vocab with amazingly ridiculous quotes. This t-shirt is on my wish list.

five: All hipsters believe they are ballers. What better way to wrap their present with some rappin’ wrapping? Get it? Okay I’m done.

six: “FRAGILE! MUST BE IMPORTED!” The leg lamp. Iconic, ridiculous and a perfectly horrible light fixture that will be the center of the party.

Would you ever throw a Hipster Christmas Party?

Shop Talk: Baba Souk

I’m not going to lie…I was thrilled to see an email notification that the Baba Souk shop opened. Baba Souk’s pinterest is one of my fave follows because the pins are always fresh, minimal and inspiring [the trifecta in my book]. Now they have a facebook so make sure you like their page. I fell in love with everything in the shop. Oh and did I mention that they wrap all of their items for FREE! Their motto: “Even if it is not a gift, it is still a gift for you!” That certainly makes life easier during the holiday. Check out my top 5 favorite handmade items.

one: I’m loving these Scandinavian Christmas Postcards – perfect to wish your family and friends a happy holiday season!

two: Six Mini Pastel plates will dazzle your table and since they are handmade they are one of a kind.

three: Hand-printed, graphic, and inspiring? Yes please!

four: I love the triangular shape of the Ladybug baba pillow – plus each side is unique [and colorful].

five: I think I drooled a little when I saw the Gold & Cube Necklace. The presentation is stunning and I love the extra touch of the washi tape. The minimalist nature of the Baba Souk jewelry is something that I appreciate and love.

What do you think of the Baba Souk shop?

Thankful Thoughts

Happy Thanksgiving my American friends! I’m extremely thankful for a four day weekend because I still have a LOT to do before I launch my redesign. Oh bedsidesigners, you are in for a treat. I cannot wait to share the story behind the redesign. My thoughts and process this month, and the behind the scene journey of switching from wordpress.com to wordpress.org. I remember before I launched my own happiness blog project I had a conversation with my husband. I kept saying, “I want to take bedsidesign to the next level and I’m so limited with the .com version.”  I had no idea where to begin. I was so scared of failing. I was terrified of making the leap. The dot-com is easy. It’s familiar. I don’t have a huge blogging budget and I didn’t want to dig a hole for something I couldn’t afford to maintain. Thankfully right around this big conversation I got a bonus at my day job. Cha-ching! The amount was just what I needed to kick it up a notch. As I’m coming to the end of my redesign, and preparing to launch a new look, site, and some extra secrets [yay for secrets] I am completely thankful that I am able to do this. Today I am trying to be present in all of this. So as I am feeling inspired and excited I just want to remind you to:

This or That: DIY Succulent Pots

Does anyone else get into color kicks? Let me explain. You see a color and/or combination. You start to pin a bunch of things that reflect this. You start to buy things and notice, “hey, this is the same color I’ve been obsessing over!” Slowly, but surely you realize that your apartment, clothes, accessories are all orange, or blue, or black and you can react in one or two ways: 1. Change – you begin to say, “No more [insert color here].” 2. You embrace it. You realize you struck gold.

I am out of denial. I realized that a lot of my accessories are in this orangey-red color. I don’t hate it. I’m not sick of it. But, I think I want to transition to more of a classic look. The cycle is repeating and I’m gravitating towards white, black, and pops of metallics. Do I sound like a broken record? If I do I’m sorry!

So here is today’s dilemma. Do I take the first way: Change. Or do I embrace it? Today I present an example of this – my succulent pots.

This is what they currently look like:

DIY: orange + gold succulent pots

Cute right? Well, one got a makeover and now I can’t decide. If I add 1 more coat of paint there is no going back. So do I try for black + gold? Behold:

What do you think?

Help me choose! Leave a comment with your favorite color combo and the majority wins!

I would also like to state that I bought these succulents back in June. That’s right – they are still alive. I finally found an apartment plants thrive in!

Color Emphasis: Black + Cream

Today’s Color Emphasis features one of my favorite color combinations…black and cream. Classy, understated and timeless:

color emphasis series by bedsidesign featuring a roundup of black and cream items

one: Black + cream + hearts + cardigan = what’s more to love?

two: The shape, the style, the size heel, and the color blocking. Yes to it all!

three: What a petite makeup bag. The bow makes it extra feminine.

four: Classic and bold, this stripe pillow would be perfect in our living room.

five: A color blocked server? Imagine the pretty food to be served on this!

six: Peter Pan built-in collar and a dress under $30? This would be such a cute dress to wear on a date.

seven: And if you are going on a date you don’t need to get all matchy-matchy but a nice silk tie would be just fine boi.

eight: It’s getting cold here, which means I now have an excuse for my scarf obsession. Little bits of metallic woven through this makes it extra special.

IN LOVE: MINIMALISTIC ART

I’ve hinted here and there that I gravitate towards a more minimalistic design style. I love extremely simplistic artwork, especially in a black, white, and gray color palette. As my design, fashion, and interior styles start to morph [and merge] I find myself honing in on classic and clean statement pieces. Does that happen to any of you? These modern, abstract paintings and prints are my favsies.
